Materials Used For Custom Pool Covers
The materials used for custom pool covers have some advantages and disadvantages. There are four main materials used in the manufacturing of custom pool covers. These materials include polypropylene mesh, scrim vinyl coated mesh, PVC coated polyester solid, and a combination vinyl coated solid and vinyl coated mesh. Each one of these materials can be used for making pool covers for both above and in ground pools.
Combination Vinyl Coated Solid and Vinyl Coated Mesh
The primary material in a custom pool cover is vinyl coated solid with a mesh for the drain at the low point of the cover. This type of cover allows less sunlight into the pool, which means that the algae level remains low. The weight is still a factor when setting up for winter though. The cover made from this material can be patched if damaged, but the weight of the cover still makes the cover less appealing.
PVC Coated Polyester Solid
This material for a custom pool cover has a high resistance in comparison to the other materials. It helps keep debris and sunlight out of the pool, but the weight of covers made from this material remains a problem as well. The water that is allowed to pool on the top can become slimy when the leaves and water start the decay process. During winter and in the spring, the pool cover needs to be pumped to get rid of the water. The removal of this type of cover can leave debris in the pool as well.
Scrim Vinyl Coated Mesh
This material is lightweight, which makes it easier to work with when covering or uncovering the pool. This particular material can be patched if it becomes damaged, but it does degrade quickly when in the sun for long periods. This fabric will allow some debris and sunlight to enter the pool, and an algae problem is more common with this type of material too.
Custom pool covers made from polypropylene mesh are the smartest choice for a pool cover. A cover produced with this substance will be lightweight and will prevent debris from entering the pool. The water will not sit on top of the cover because it drains into the pool through the weave. It also has the best UV resistance than any other material it also will not degrade very quickly. The only problem with this particular material is that it cannot be patched. The weave material will allow leaves and debris to sift through and will result in a great deal of algae in the pool.
The different materials to choose from can make it hard to decide which custom pool cover would work the best. You can choose the material that will serve your needs more by deciding on the weight, coverage rating, and ability to patch the material if damaged.
Custom pool covers can be made to fit your pool size no matter how large or small. The ratings and reviews of pool covers will allow you see the overall rankings of each material, and see how it stands up to the elements and durability.
